Mort les armes à la main. En 1990, Idriss Deby Itno était un rebelle à la conquête du pouvoir. 30 ans après avoir gouverné plus ou moins solitairement le Tchad, il est mort le 20 avril dernier en defendant, face à une incursion rebelle, son fauteuil présidentiel et une paix « chèrement acquise ».

L’annonce de sa disparition subite et tragique a bouleversé plus d’un Tchadien. Tant, pour le vide politique dans lequel est depuis plongé le pays et l’incertitude quant à une succession constitutionnelle paisible.

Même si l’opposition démocratique compatit avec la famille politique du président défunt, le Conseil militaire de transition (CMT) érigé précipitamment en nouvelle autorité du pays ne fait pas l’unanimité. Plusieurs leaders politiques et organisations de la société civile ont exprimé un non-catégorique à ce qu’ils qualifient de “monarchisation ».

Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, le nouveau chef d’État par intérim peut compter toutefois sur un soutien circonstanciel de la France qui a “pris acte” de la création du CMT aussitôt après l’annonce de la mort du président Deby au peuple tchadien. Lors des obsèques de Deby ce vendredi, Emmanuel Macron a juré depuis N’Djamena de défendre la stabilité et l’intégrité du Tchad.

Le nouveau locataire du Palais rose peut aussi compter sur la fidélité acquise de son parent Moussa Faki, réélu à la tête de la commission de l’Union africaine le 6 février dernier pour un mandat de quatre ans. Pour rappel, la transition au Tchad déclarée par le CMT pourrait durer trois ans. En sa qualité de président de la commission de l’UA, Moussa Faki s’est même déjà rendu à N’Djamena, aussitôt après l’annonce officielle de la mort de Deby pour “s’enquérir” de la situation. Il a été reçu par le patron du CMT. Les garants de la démocratie, habitués à condamner les transitions illégales et militaires de par l’Afrique, ont exceptionnellement choisi de se ranger derrière un coup de force anti-constitutionnel au nom de leur lutte éternelle contre le terrorisme au Sahel.

L’incertitude plane aussi sur les intentions du Fact, à l’origine de la mort de Deby. Pour la rébellion, l’objectif était de le capturer puis le contraindre à céder le pouvoir pacifiquement et non le faire remplacer par un autre Deby.

Que feront-ils maintenant ?

À en croire les portes parole de la rebellion, une marche sur N’Djamena est la seule suite logique. La trêve annoncée par ces derniers pour permettre aux familles éplorées d’enterrer la dépouille mortelle du maréchal prend fin ce vendredi. Disent-ils, avec Deby est mort son regime.
