Sanctions ou pas, Erdogan déterminé à poursuivre son offensive militaire en Syrie

Le Chef de l’État turc, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a convoqué une session extraordinaire de son équipe gouvernementale, mercredi matin, à l’occasion de laquelle il a promis de poursuivre l’offensif de son armée en terre syrienne, afin, dit-il, de créer un corridor sécuritaire permettant aux milliers de réfugiés syriens en terre turque d’être rapatriés vers leur pays d’origine.

L’incursion de l’armée turque en terre syrienne, lancée le 9 octobre dernier, a été sévèrement critiquée sur la scène internationale par plusieurs pays y compris certains alliés clés de la Turquie.

Les États-Unis, membre de l’Organisation du traité de l’Atlantique nord (Otan), avait aussitôt imposé des sanctions économiques sur la Turquie et promet d’inscrire des hautes personnalités politiques proches du régime sur la liste de personæ non gratæ sur sol américain.

La Turquie avait au départ indiqué que son opération militaire avait pour but de faire repousser d’une trentaine de kilomètres à l’intérieur du territoire syrien des terroristes qui se trouvaient au long de sa frontière sud avec la Syrie.

Une offensive facilitée par le retrait de l’armée américaine du nord-est syrien 

L’armée américaine qui opérait dans le nord-est de la Syrie a retiré son personnel militaire, ce qui a permis à la Turquie de lancer son offensif dans cette localité contre des groupes semi-autonomes, notamment les kurdes ; elle a aussi pu gagner rapidement du terrain et continuer son opération militaire au-delà des limites qu’elle s’est au départ imposée.

La plupart des alliés occidentaux de la Turquie, à l’instar des États-Unis a appelé Erdogan a suspendre immédiatement son offensif « unilatéral ». L’Allemagne de sa part a suspendu la vente d’armes à son allié.

Visiblement déterminé à poursuivre son offensif, Recep Tayyip Erdogan a balayé d’un revers de la main les sanctions imminentes annoncées par les États-Unis contre son équipe gouvernementale. Pour Erdogan, la Turquie n’a aucune leçon à apprendre de ses alliés occidentaux dont les actions ont dans le passé déraillé des paroles.

Une délégation de haut niveau attendue à Ankara

Le président américain, Donald Trump, qui avait promis de « détruire l’économie turque » dans le cas où la Turquie ne suspend pas son offensive, a par ailleurs, confirmé l’arrivée imminente à Ankara de son vice-président, Mike Pence, et le chef de la diplomatie, Mike Pompeo, pour des consultations diplomatiques avec le chef de l’État turc dans l’espoir de négocier un cessez-le-feu.
